08:04 am - Buried in the noise
For those who haven't been following Deep Blue: there was a news release from the UofM about public access to U-M research work. My research being in the Open Access area, I have been following the twists and turns of this initiative both at UofM and some other research institutions - and it seems that again the "build it and they will come" fallacy is playing out in most places.

The inherent tension between institution and field typically imply that researchers, especially those that are just starting out (for whom publication in top journals and visibility among peers is a key issue) choose the path that their field takes. If Open Access is acceptable in their field, the next question is - institutional repository or field or journal based repository? I feel that senior researchers, professors and prolific academics, for whom tenure and such things are a given should take the lead and use these  OA repositories first, network effects, peer pressure and such things will then reduce the hesitation of the junior folks in doing the same. The OA movement though is slowly but surely moving forward.

06:51 pm - My early impressions of the US - Part I
I got to talking with someone this afternoon and it came up... when did you first hear about the US of A and how and what formed your early and ongoing impressions of it, and now after living in this country for a while- what do you think about those early impressions... ?

So Im taking a walk down memory lane ... (turns out to be a long walk to get that far back ;)... and there is this process of sifting for memories of my first time... or atleast as close to it as I will get. Of course I expect to take many detours along the way, readers prepare to be alternately bored, intrigued, wowed or just plain confused.

Well let me see... visions of Great Britain come a little earlier, so also Australia and the West Indies - i remember listening to cricket commentaries on the radio, filled with static, sometimes with accents - early in the morning, or at other weird times. But that is not the memory i was looking for - I've gotten the countries wrong. Im looking for the USA.

I think I heard about a cousin (much older) who was at grad school in the US, America they called it. (i must have been 3 or 4). But having never met this cousin then, it remains a very vague empty memory. And then perhaps when i was 4 still, I got a slightly better view of a very small piece of "America" - Chicago. We were learning about Swami Vivekananda and how he went to Chicago to deliver this address about Hinduism at the World Parliament of Religions. I did see where it was on the world map too!

RAMBLE WARNING I remember us having to learn pieces of his speeches to deliver in class. Most of our class couldnt read too well at that time - and some of them lisped as well - so we were given teacher-picked passages to recite. Because I could read long words (i didnt understand them too well, but i could read 'em) and probably because I didn't lisp, I got to learn "by-heart" (from memory)and recite this passage, which I can still remember very well. Imagine a 4 year old saying these hard words - Man it must have been hard. :) But i think I had a lot of coaching on pronunciation and delivery.

Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilization, and sent whole nations to despair. Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now. But their time has come; and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honor of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal.

** Now that I think of it, its still as apt today as it was a hundred and 112 years ago. Why don't we grow up? and I don't mean the 4 year olds referred to above. **

Well - what I was getting at was, we got to hear that Chicago was a huge city in "America" and it was where all these important meetings were held - it was populated by beautiful, rich women who were very interested in Eastern philosophy and they were very polite. And that was what I thought "America" was when I was 4.

well, more in the next instalment of impressions of "america". Keep your comments coming.
